AWEIL EAST COUNTY LEVEL COMMUNITY CONSULTATIVE AND ADVOCACY WORKSHOP ON ENDING CHILD AND FORCEFUL MARRIAGES AS A DRIVER OF CONFLICT WAS CONCLUDED SUCCESSFULLY ON 19TH JANUARY 2023
Community Initiative for Partnership and Development (CIPAD) with technical and financial support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has successfully conducted one day Aweil East County Level Community Consultative and Advocacy Workshop on Ending Child and Forceful Marriages as a driver of conflict in Kan-ajak Boma of Mangar-tong Payam in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State on 19th January, 2023.
The workshop was attended by 20 (7 females and 13 males) different stakeholders’ representatives from chiefs, youth, women, religious leaders, farmers, cattle keepers, police, prison service, Ministry of gender, local government officials, and civil society organizations.
The workshop has created a forum which enable the discussion of the causes of child marriage, the link between child marriage and conflict, and development of recommendations aimed at addressing child marriages and improving social cohesion among communities of in the County.
Among the legal framework discussed were child rights as stipulated in South Sudan Child Act, 2008, African Charter on the Rights & Welfare of the Child – ACRWC 1990, and United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child – UNCRC 1989.
The consultative workshop was concluded with the collective call for ending child and forceful marriages in the communities of Aweil East County.
This activity was successfully with support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s Peace and Community Cohesion Project II (PaCC II) funded by the Government of Sweden.
